The invention provides a process for the production of titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) by the chlorination of titanium values in a titanium--containing starting material. The process includes exposing the starting material to a chlorinating agent and contacting the starting material with an inert liquid while the starting material is exposed to the chlorinating agent. The inert liquid is at a temperature of 200 - 350°C and is at a pressure of 5 - 100 atmospheres (1 atmosphere = 101.325kN/m2). This causes the starting material to react with the chlorinating agent to form TiCl4. The invention also extends to TiCl4 whenever made in accordance with the method.

Cette invention concerne un procédé d'obtention de tétrachlorure de titane (TiCl4) qui fait intervenir une chloration de valeurs de titane dans un produit de départ renfermant du titane. Ce procédé consiste à exposer le produit de départ à un agent de chloration tout en mettant ledit produit en contact avec un liquide inerte. Ce liquide inerte a une température de 200 -350oC sous une pression de 5 à 100 atmosphères (1 atmosphère = 101,325kN/m). Il en résulte une réaction entre le produit de départ et l'agent de chloration, avec formation de TiCl4. Cette invention porte également sur le TiCl4 obtenu selon ce procédé.
