ABSTRACT The invention relates to a method of determining the degree of microbial contamination in a liquid substance, comprising the following steps: (a) selecting a number of titration wells for holding progressive serial dilutions of a starting sample of the substance; (b) adding to each well a first solution of an equal amount of microorganism nutrient along with an equal amount of a redox indicator which changes from one color to another in the presence of active microbial respiration; (c) establishing in a starting or first well an index solution comprising a measured amount of the substance in said first solution in the starting well; (d) diluting the subsequent wells in a serial dilution starting with an aliquot of the index solution; and (e) recording the number of serial wells which exhibit the color changes as a proportional indication of the degree of contamination. The method provides detection of microbial contamination by an accelerated process so that an unacceptable contamination may be easily and quickly determined.
