This invention applies to the pulp and paper industry, specifically to the measurement of refiner production rate in Thermomechanical pulp (TMP) mills. TMP refiners are fed by screw feeders, for which the rate of material delivery is given on a volumetric basis (i.e. m3/min of wood chips). However, TMP plants are controlled on the basis of mass production rate (i.e. kg/min of dry wood). There is currently no direct way to measure the mass production rate of TMP refiners. This invention will enable such a measurement using existing sensor technology arranged in a novel configuration. The invention uses two TMP refiner blowline consistency sensors and a liquid flow meter. The first consistency sensor is located near the discharge of the refiner. A dilution port is located in the blowline downstream of the first sensor. The second consistency sensor is located downstream of the dilution water port. The production rate can be calculated from a mass balance equation if the two consistencies and the dilution water flowrate are known.
