A toaster having a mechanically actuated cover for each of one or more toasting volumes. Each cover at least partially covers a toasting volume within the toaster during toasting, thereby reducing heat transfer (primarily due to convection) away from the toaster and the object being toasted. In preferred embodiments, each cover is a pair of slidably mounted plates (14, 15). When a carriage (8) (supporting an object to be toasted) is manually lowered by a user, a mechanical linkage (2, 7) attached to the carriage causes the plates to slide together to cover (substantially or totally) a toasting volume. When the carriage springs up (at the end of the toasting operation), the mechanical linkage (2, 7) slides the plates away from each other to allow removal of the toasted object from the toaster.

L'invention concerne un grille-pain possédant une fermeture mécanique pour chacun de ses compartiments, s'il en a plusieurs. La fermeture recouvre au moins en partie la fente de son compartiment en cours de fonctionnement, ce qui a pour effet de réduire le transfert de chaleur (essentiellement dû à la convexion) depuis le grille-pain lui-même et l'article en cours de grillage. Dans certains modes de réalisation préférés, ladite fermeture se présente sous la forme d'une paire de plaques coulissantes (14, 15). Lorsqu'un chariot (8) (sur lequel est placé l'article destiné à être grillé) est abaissé manuellement par l'utilisateur, une liaison mécanique (2, 7) partant du chariot fait coulisser les plaques conjointement afin de couvrir (sensiblement ou totalement) une fente de compartiment. Lorsque le chariot se relève brusquement (en fin de grillage), la liaison mécanique (2, 7) fait écarter les plaques l'une de l'autre pour permettre le retrait de l'article grillé.
