A gasket (104) for sealing between a toilet base (108) a closet flange (106) has a ring (130) of water impermeable elastomer having a ring upper surface (136) spaced apart from a ring lower ledge (154) by a separation distance S sufficiently large that the ring (130) becomes compressed between the toilet base (108) and the closet flange (106). The ring (130) is sized to cover a portion of the closet flange (106) while fitting between mounting bolts (128) used to secure the toilet base (108) to the closet flange (106). The gasket (104) also has an annular extension (132) attached to the ring (130) and sized to fit into the closet flange (106). The ring (130) may be rectangular or trapezoidal in cross section. A preferred embodiment has a quasi-trapezoidal cross section with a groove (160) that provides the ring (130) with increased compressibility.
