A tone detector for detecting a tone such a DTMF tone by converting the signal to the frequency domain, then extracting signal features to input to an artificial neural network. The neural network is trained to detect the tone, or detect which of many predetermined tones, is present. It can be arranged to operate more quickly than conventional tone detection methods. This is particularly significant for coding or compressing signals which contain tones and other information. Since it is often more efficient to code or compress such tones separately from the other information, it can be essential to detect and separate such tones very quickly to avoid the risk of a single tone being coded or compressed twice, particularly if the signal is delay sensitive. A telephone conversation is an example.
