A hand tool or spreader, capable of applying a force to the edge of a tongue & groove board to position the board and engage the tongue & groove to the adjacent board. A quick-acting bar spreader, operable with one hand, comprising a fixed jaw secured to one end of a slide bar, the other end of which is received by a movable member which comprises a jamming pin, said pin is driven into a wall stud to hold the spreader stationary while in operation; a one way drive means for advancing the movable member against the slide bar and a braking means for preventing backward motion of the movable member until released by applying pressure to the brake release lever.
