A patient's obstructive sleep apnea is treated by identifying a patient with sleep apnea attributable at least in part to movement of a base of a tongue of the patient toward a pharyngeal wall of the patient. The tongue is stiffened by an implant sized to be placed within the tongue. A distal portion (14) of the implant is sized to extend within the tongue from a first end near a mandibular-geniohyoid interface to a second end near a base of the tongue. A proximal portion (12) is attached to the first end and adapted to be secured to a jaw bone of the patient following a period of healing after placement of the implant in the tongue.

On traite l'apnée obstructive du sommeil d'un patient en vérifiant si l'apnée du sommeil dont souffre le patient peut être attribuée au moins en partie au déplacement de la base de la langue du patient en direction de la paroi du pharynx du patient. La langue est rigidifiée par un implant dimensionné de manière à pouvoir être placé à l'intérieur de la langue. Une partie distale (14) de l'implant est dimensionnée de manière à s'étendre dans la langue depuis une première extrémité proche de l'interface mandibule-géniohyoïde et une deuxième extrémité proche de la base de la langue. Une partie proximale (12) est fixée à la première extrémité et est conçue pour être fixée à un os de la mâchoire du patient après une période de cicatrisation qui suit le placement de l'implant dans la langue.
