An electrostatic latent image present on a recording member surface is toned by contacting the image with a pre-toner coating present on a carrier element surface while releasing the pre-toner coating by contacting such a coating with an insulating solvent. The solvent released pre-toner coating is transferred to the electrostatic image under a forward biased voltage, and the carrier and recording member are separated.
