A tonometer (10), for determining intraocular pressure, has a body, which can be a transparent substantially tubular body (12). A plunger (28) is located within the body and a coil spring (36) acts between the body and the plunger. A marker (24) member is frictionally retained within the body and is displaced relative to an external scale (20) on the body. In use, the tonometer is brought up against the eyelid (50) of a closed eye and the body displaced relative to the head of the plunger until the pressure is sufficient to create a pressure phosphene. The device is then removed and the displacement of the marker member indicative of the applied pressure is read. This reading corresponds to the intraocular pressure. The device may include a return member (49) for returning the marker member to a zero or rest position.

Le tonomètre (10) de la présente invention, instrument servant à déterminer la pression intraoculaire, comporte un corps, qui peut être transparent et de forme sensiblement cylindrique (12). Ledit corps est équipé d'un plongeur (28) et un ressort hélicoïdal (36) exerce une action entre le corps et le plongeur. Un élément indicateur (24), qui est retenu par frottement à l'intérieur du corps, peut se déplacer par rapport à des graduations externes (20) du corps. En cours d'utilisation, on amène le tonomètre contre la paupière (50) d'un oeil fermé et le corps du tonomètre se déplace par rapport à la tête du plongeur jusqu'à ce que la pression soit suffisante pour créer un phosphène. On retire alors le dispositif et l'on peut observer le déplacement de l'élément indicateur qui est représentatif de la pression appliquée. La mesure indiquée correspond à la pression intraoculaire. Ce dispositif peut comporter un élément de rappel (49) conçu pour ramener l'élément indicateur à zéro ou à sa position d'équilibre.
