A TOOL AND METHOD FOR TERMINATING ELECTRICAL CONDUCTORS IN CONTACT MEMBERS ABSTRACT The present invention is directed generally to solderless electrical connections and, more particularly, to a novel tool and method for terminating a conductor into a portion of an electrical contact premounted in an electrical connector. Prior art solderless, insulation piercing connectors are available, but such con- nectors tend to develop high contact resistance, especially if the conductor is an insulated con- ductor having a stranded wire core. The high con- tact resistance results from the tensile forces applied to the conductor when its insulation is pierced as well as from cold flow of the insulation surrounding the core which permits the individual strands to move with respect to the insulation- piercing contacts. This problem with prior art connectors is solved according the disclosed tool and method for terminating conductors wherein the conductor is inserted into a contact and elec- trically engaged with at least one conductor engaging element of the contact and simultaneously portions of the contact other than the at least one conductor engaging element thereof is crimped onto the conductor to mechanically retain the conductor in electrical engagement with the con- tact member. The contact may be premounted in an electrical connector assembly prior to termi- nating the conductor.
