Abstract A tool for manually tilling, loosening and aerating soil and removing vegetation has relatively short handles that are spaced apart to permit the handles to be brought around the sides of the operator during use. Tines for engaging the soil are mounted on a crossbar and are of a length to project into the soil for tilling and turning the soil. The handles are mounted in a pair of sleeves fixed to the crossbar at opposite ends of the crossbar and extend upward toward and away from the operator, such that the operator grips the handles when they are held 10 to 15 degrees, and preferably 11 to 14 degrees, off the vertical with the tines projecting vertically into the soil. The sleeves provide a means for holding the handles in position without welding or otherwise affecting the handle materials and thus provide strength and durability of attachment. The sleeves may have means for releasably holding the handles in the sleeves, such as a cam member that tightens the sleeve about the handle. The handles may be of varying lengths, or adjustable in length, and the tines may be 2 or more in number and may be supplemented by other ground engaging means, such as cutting blades.
