Sialyl oligosaccharides and derivatives useful for regulating inflammatory responses, and treating related disorders and conditions, and/or improving the texture or appearance of the skin, as well as topical pharmaceutical and cosmetic compositions containing sialyl oligosaccharide or derivatives and methods for their use are described. The sialyl oligosaccharides or derivatives of the present invention are also useful in topical compositions suitable for prophylactic or therapeutic treatment of disorders associated with the inflammatory response of cells in the skin.
