A torque anchor catcher for use with a production unit for a cased wellbore having a wellhead and a rod string connected to actuate a downhole pump for producing fluid up through a tubing string to the surface of the ground. The torque anchor catcher comprises a hollow mandrel assembly comprising a mandrel that is connectable to the tubing string; a slip cage concentrically arranged about the mandrel for axial movement relative to the mandrel and extensible slips mounted on the slip cage for outward movement relative to the slip cage and the mandrel. Means are provided responsive to downward movement of the mandrel relative to the slip cage for extending the slips into anchoring engagement with a casing wall of the wellbore to thereby releasably anchor the lower end of the tubing string in the wellbore. A J-sub is concentrically arranged about the mandrel for axial movement relative to the mandrel and at least one J-slot is formed in the J-sub. At least one lug extends outwardly from the mandrel assembly, one such lug for each J-slot and each lug extending outwardly into registry with a respective J-slot. Means are provided for moving the slips radially outwardly into anchoring engagement with the casing wall in response to downward movement of the mandrel relative to the J-sub. Each said J-slot comprises upper and lower slot portions and an intermediate vertical slot portion extending therebetween, each lug being positioned in a respective upper slot portion during running in of the tubing string and moving down a respective vertical slot portion during setting of the slips and positioned in a respective lower slot portion to lock the slips in anchoring engagement with the casing wall.
