A fastening element (20) capable of being attached to a panel by deforming the panel is disclosed. A barrel portion (26) is tubular with an open free end (32) and has an axis defining a circumference. A radial flange portion (24) is integral with the tubular barrel portion (26) opposite the free end (32) and defines a circumferential surface (40). The radial flange portion (24) includes a plurality of projections (44) spaced apart and extending outwardly from the circumferential surface (40). Each of the projections (44) defines at least one wall (45) generally perpendicular to the circumference about the axis of the barrel portion (26).
