A torque transfer mechanism is provided for controlling the magnitude of a clutch engagement force exerted on a multi-plate clutch assembly that is operably disposed between a first rotary and a second rotary member. The torque transfer mechanism includes a clutch actuator assembly for generating and applying a clutch engagement force on the clutch assembly. The clutch actuator assembly includes an electric motor/brake unit and a torque/force conversion mechanism. The motor/brake unit can be operated in either of a motor mode or a brake mode to cause bi-directional linear movement of an output member of the torque/force conversion mechanism. The thrust force generated by the torque/force conversion mechanism is applied to the clutch assembly. The dual mode feature of the electric motor/brake unit significantly reduces the power requirements. A torque vectoring drive axle is equipped with a pair of such torque transfer mechanisms.

Selon l'invention, un mécanisme de transfert de couple permet de commander la magnitude d'une force de contact d'embrayage exercée sur un ensemble d'embrayage multi-plaques qui est disposé fonctionnellement entre des premier et second éléments rotatifs. Ce mécanisme de transfert de couple présente un ensemble d'actionneur d'embrayage servant à engendrer et à appliquer une force de contact d'embrayage sur l'ensemble d'embrayage. Ledit ensemble d'actionneur d'embrayage comporte un module de frein/moteur électrique et un mécanisme de conversion de couple/force. Le module de frein/moteur peut fonctionner soit en mode moteur, soit en mode frein de manière à engendrer un mouvement linéaire bidirectionnel d'un élément de sortie du mécanisme de conversion de couple/force. La force d'impulsion engendrée par le mécanisme de conversion de couple/force est appliquée à l'ensemble d'embrayage. La caractéristique de mode dual du module de frein/moteur électrique permet de diminuer considérablement les exigences de puissance. Un axe d'entraînement de vecteur de couple est équipé d'une paire de tels mécanismes de transfert de couple.
