Toughened biaxially oriented polyamide films prepared by dry blending i) a polyamide homopolymer, copolymer, or blends thereof; and ii) a functionalized polyolefin terpolymer comprising maleic anhydride, ethyl acrylate, and an olefin, to thereby form a dry mixture. The dry mixture is melted to form a polymer blend, which is then formed into a polymer film. The edges of the film are pinned to a casting roll, and the film is plasticized in at least one water bath. The polymer film is subsequently biaxially oriented. The result is a toughened biaxially oriented film which is resistant to pinholes, cracks, and other structural defects. Such films are particularly suited for making packaging materials for various food products.

La présente invention concerne des films renforcés à orientation bi-axiale que l'on obtient en mélangeant à sec, d'une part i) un homopolymère ou un copolymère de polyamide ou certains de leurs mélanges, avec d'autre part ii) un terpolymère de polyoléfine fonctionnalisé comprenant un anhydride malique, un éthyl-acrylate et une oléfine, de façon à former un mélange sec. On réalise ensuite la fusion de ce mélange sec de façon à obtenir un mélange de polymères que l'on tire ensuite en film de polymères. Les rebords du film sont ensuite piqués sur un rouleau enducteur, le film étant ensuite plastifié dans au moins un bain d'eau. Le film polymère subit ensuite une orientation bi-axiale. On obtient in fine un film renforcé à orientation bi-axiale résistant à la formation des trous d'épingle, des craquelures et autres défauts structuraux. De tels films conviennent particulièrement à la confection d'emballages pour différents types de produits alimentaires.
