A trigger mechanism for a toy vehicle provides a breakaway body. The toy vehicle comprises a chassis having wheels rotatably mounted thereon and a body releasably mounted thereon. The trigger mechanism complises flanges extending along each inside surface of the body, a base mountable on the chassis, a first cross bar and a second cross bar pivotally mounted on the base in a scissor-like arrangement, a first spring for urging the first cross bar and the second cross bar outwardly for engaging the flanges retaining the body onto the chassis and a second spring for urging the body away from the chassis. The second spring is mounted between the trigger mechanism and the body. Impact on either side of the body urges the first cross bar and the second cross bar to rotate inwardly releasing the body from the chassis.
