A trigger mechanism for a toy vehicle provides a breakaway body. The toy vehicle comprises a chassis having wheels rotatably mounted thereon and a body releasably mounted thereon. The trigger mechanism complises flanges extending along each inside surface of the body, a base mountable on the chassis, a first cross bar and a second cross bar pivotally mounted on the base in a scissor-like arrangement, a first spring for urging the first cross bar and the second cross bar outwardly for engaging the flanges retaining the body onto the chassis and a second spring for urging the body away from the chassis. The second spring is mounted between the trigger mechanism and the body.
