Traceability of shellfish is a much needed service for the seafood industry. Current ways of tracing seafood are minimal while tracing of shellfish is nearly nonexistent. Tracing shellfish is necessary for indicating where the shellfish was fished from, farmed and packed from. Traceability of shellfish involves monitoring the shellfish from harvesting all the way to the end buyer. Using RFDI and GPS technology, we will capture the exact fishing area of each shellfish by using modern technology in the rubber bands which are used by the fishermen on the claws of the lobster, snow crab, Jonah crab, etc. We will capture and store this data in an accessible database to assist the Department of Fisheries and Ocean as well as our fishermen and consumers. This information will also help the conversation savvy end buyer to know exactly where the products were caught; country and fishing area. If there are any diseases reported on some shellfish, it will be easy to pinpoint the exact location where that shellfish came from and it's fishing vessel. This makes it easier for the authorities to concentrate on that area for investigating diseases while limiting the exclusion of that shellfish to only the affected area. Furthermore, this type of tracing will assist in evaluating small size shellfish (most especially lobster) catch areas versus large size catch areas. This information can be used by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans to limit fishing to the areas where the catch sizes are an acceptable size. It will also be able to determine where the low and high volume catches are and address the situation accordingly.
