ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The tamping head of a mobile track tamper comprises two pairs of reciprocable ballast tamping tool implements, each pair being arranged at a respective side of each track rail, a reciprocating power drive for the ballast tamping tool implements of each pair, a carrier part associated with the ballast tamping tool implements, a pivot extending in the direction of elongation of the machine and supporting the carrier part for pivoting in a plane extending trans- versely thereto, and a vibrating power drive connected to the carrier part and imparting to the tamping tool implements an oscillatory vibrating motion in a plane extending perpen- dicularly to the pivot in each position of the tamping tool implements.
