A traction-altering, e.g., traction-enhancing, disposable pad for releasable securement to an article of footwear, e.g., a boot, having a forefoot region ground engaging portion and a heel region ground engaging portion. The pad comprises a base and a cover sheet. The base is formed of a thin sheet of material having an outer surface and an inner surface. The outer surface may be in the form of a traction-enhancing material, e.g., a plurality of particles of carbide grit or a mass of disorganized synthetic material fibers spread across the outer surface, or a traction-decreasing material. The inner surface of the base has a pressure-sensitive adhesive thereon. The cover sheet is formed of a non-stick material to enable it to be releasably secured over the pressure-sensitive adhesive of the pad, while being readily removable, e.g., peelable, therefrom to expose the pressure-sensitive adhesive. When the pressure sensitive adhesive is exposed the base can be releasably secured to at least one of the ground engaging surfaces of the article of footwear. A stack of plural pads with associated adhesive layers and cover sheets may be provided. Alternatively, a stack of multilayer sheets having associated adhesive surfaces and associated releasably securable liner sheets may be provided to secure the pad to the article of footwear.
