The invention relates to a traction bar which can be modularly connected to other substantially identical traction bars by short lengths of connecting link chain to form a continuous loop of traction bars which acts as a traction device for rubber tired vehicles. According to one aspect of the invention, an individual traction bar includes a longitudinally extending tire- contacting cross member having first and second end portions and first and second releasable connectors which extend rigidly from respective first and second end portions. Each releasable connector includes a pair of oppositely facing hook portions which define a link receiving opening to receive a link from a connecting chain. The hook portions further define a link admitting slot, in communication with the link receiving opening to admit the link of the connecting chain into the link receiving opening. A portion of a link of the connecting chain can be inserted into the link receiving opening such that the link encircles one of the hook portions and hinges thereabout.
