A traction device is formed from three plates of expanded metal with the edges of the expanded metal turned downwardly at the sides to engage the ground. The plates are connected by 8-shaped hook members which allow the device to articulate or to fold in a way which prevents it from being thrown out from under the tire. The front edge of the front one of the plates extends forwardly of the side edges to define a tongue which can be tucked under the tire.
