Tissue bulk is preserved during converting through the use of a pull section comprised of two endless converging belts, toothed pulleys and side frames. The apparatus is designed such that the top and bottom belt are driven in time together at the same surface speed. The converging belts have molded lugs on both the inner and outer belt circumference. The molded lugs on the inner circumference are particularly adapted for use on toothed pulleys. The molded lugs on the outer circumference of the belts intermesh causing the tissue sausage to approximate a sine wave profile. The sine wave tissue profile in combination with the lugs significantly increases the tractive force of the pull section allowing for operation at lower compressive loads preserving tissue bulk.
