The control system senses (80) acceleration (a) and the ratio of vertical to horizontal forces (HF/VF) at the fifth wheel (34) by means of sensors (170, 172) mounted to the tractor (28) only and modulates the brakes to cause the ratio HF/VF to equal acceleration.
