A musical instrument training system (20) for a stringed musical instrument (21) having a body (34), a fingerboard (26), a plurality of strings (36), and an electric pickup (27). A fingering display (left hand) (52, 53) and a playing display (right hand) (57) are mounted on the fingerboard (26). A control circuit (28), mounted on the body (34), receives input signals from one channel of a stereo (23) for controlling the fingering and playing displays. The fingering and playing displays comprise an array of LEDs (53, 56) and LCDs (52, 59) that indicate the strings to finger, the fingers to use, the strings to play and the direction of play. A freeze control (42) permits the user to "freeze" a section of the input signals in a buffer (65) for repetitive practice. A tuning circuit (85-87) permits the user to compare the tone of a string with a stored tone via a tuning display (83) to help tune the instrument.
