TRANSCRIBING SYSTEM AND METHOD ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Disclosed is a transcribing system and method for transcribing signals recorded on a recording medium including a plurality of tracks. The system includes a listening device, motion control means for moving the medium either in a forward or a reverse direction relative to the listening device and transcribe movement means for operating the motion control means to move the medium in the forward direction. The voice- generated dictation signals which are recorded on a first track of the medium, are sensed by the listening device and converted into audible output signals. The instruction indexing signal which is recorded on a second track of the plurality of tracks is sensed by the listening device and converted, responsive only to signals recorded in the second track, into a perceivable output signal. A voice-generated instruction signal is recorded on one of the plurality of tracks other than the first track. The voice-generated instruction signal is sensed by the listening device. Following operation of the instruction indexing signal conversion the voice-generated instruction signal is selectively convertible into an audible output signal. The selective conversion is responsive only to the instruction signals recorded on the medium.
