This is a transcutaenous iontophoretic drug applicator, which includes an array of reservoirs (10) which are electrically insulated from one another, some of which contain the drug to be administered. The applicator further includes a partially electrically conducting layer (12), preferably formed of two portions, each segment corresponding to an electrode (14), which overlies and contacts the reservoirs (10), and electrodes (14) which overlay and contact the partially electrically conducting layer (12). An electrical power source (16) supplies power to the electrodes (14) and causes the drug to be pushed out of the reservoirs (10) and into the skin (11). The applicator is designed to keep the local current flux below threshold irritation and burn levels regardless of variations in electrical skin
