ABSTRACT A transfer membrane assembly in which one fluid is passed with a pulsatile flow through a first conduit (22) between two transfer membranes (18) which are provided with a close packed array of dimples (42) so that vortex mixing occurs. Second conduits (23) are formed on the other side of each membrane between that membrane and an adjacent profiled plate 15. Each dimple (42) partially nests in a depression (40) in the respective plate, the depressions (40) being connected in rows by grooves (41). The maximum diameter and depth of each dimple (42) is less than the corresponding dimensions of the respective depression (40).
