TRANSFER-PRINTING PROCESS AND APPARATUS Abstract A transfer-printing apparatus includes rollers that remove workpieces one by one from a hopper wherein the work- pieces are stacked and advance each workpiece to a printing station along a path, each workpiece being moistened with solvent during such advancement. A transfer-printing mechanism has two press rollers with rotational axles parallel to those of the advancing rollers. A first one of these press rollers consists of a radially retired surface and a cylindrical press surface, the radially retired surface constituting a gap between a second press roller for inserting therethrough a master card with printed materials thereon. The cylindrical press surface serves the function of pressing with the second press roller the workpiece and the master card to transfer-print the printed materials and to remove the master card together with the workpiece in the returning direction of the master card. A master card position detector generates a signal when the master card is manually inserted through the gap to a pre- determined position. A workpiece advancing position detector provided along the path generates a signal when the leading edge of the workpiece reaches a predetermined point. A driving mechanism drives the workpiece advancing rollers and the transfer-printing mechanism for one rotation to recover the gap between the radially retired surface and the second press roller after completion of the transfer-printing. A driving mechanism control circuit controls the driving mechanism so that the workpiece advancing rollers move the workpiece in accordance with the signal from the master card position detector and so that the transfer-printing mechanism begins operation during a predetermined time interval after the signal is generated from the workpiece advancing position detector. This apparatus has the following useful features: (1) the master card is inserted manually, (2) the master card is inserted into a gap between the press rollers to assume a predetermined position, and (3) the master card is returned to the inlet together with the workpiece.
