2066614 9104327 PCTABS00003 A transgenic animal model for viral infections, especially human immunodeficiency virus, is constructed by incorporating the genes ncoding essential components for viral infection of the animal into the chromosome of the embryo. Expression of the genes essential for infection and replication of the virus provides a means for assaying for compounds which inhibit infection and replication of the virus. An example of the construction of a transgenic animal expressing the human CD4 receptor, the receptor required for infection of human cells by HIV-1, on the surface of its lymphoid cells demonstrates the effectiveness of the techniques.
