The present invention is directed to a transgenic plant cell comprising a recombinant nucleic acid that directs the expression of a cell wall modulation protein. The transgenic plant containing the transgenic plant cell exhibits altered morphology compared to a progenitor plant which does not contain the recombinant nucleic acid when the transgenic plant and the progenitor plant are cultivated under the same conditions. In accordance with the present invention, the cell wall modulation protein is an endo-1,4-.beta.-glucanase.
