TRANSITION MACHINE - A GENERAL PURPOSE COMPUTER ABSTRACT The present invention relates to a computing machine operable for transitioning between different states for solving an algorithm. The machine is comprised of a data processing unit including a unit for computing data in accordance with application programs; a memory storage unit accessible by the data processing unit for storing the application programs and for storing data for use with and resulting from execution of the application programs; and a hardware executive unit operable for scheduling the applica- tion programs. The hardware unit is comprised of a unit for storing indications of the status of a plurality of data conditions which collectively enable execution of the application programs utilized in solving the algorithm; a unit for storing indications of the relevance of each of the status indications corresponding to each of the application programs; a unit for updating the status indications upon execution of the application programs; and a unit for enabling execution of the application programs in response to the status indications and the corresponding relevance indications.
