ABSTRACT The machine recognition of hand printed characters is performed efficiently and economically by obtaining specific measurements from a normalized form of the hand printed character and using a logic tree and verifier to logically determine the identity of the character. The measurements found particularly useful are transition measurements which indicate a measure of the black or white run length or number of transitions in a scan line of the normalized character. To recognize a character, tests are run on the transition measurement by use of the logic tree and verifier.
