Application programs compiled for a first, "source", computer are translated, from their object form, for execution on a second, "target", computer. The translated application programs are linked or otherwise bound with a translation of the source computer system software. The translated system software operates on the image of the source computer address space in the target computer exactly as it did in the source computer. The semantics of the source computer system softwareare thus preserved identically. In addition, a virtual hardware environment is provided in the target computer to manage events and to deal with differences in the address space layouts between the source and target computers.

Des programmes d'application compilés pour un premier ordinateur, l'ordinateur « source », sont traduits à partir de leur code objet pour fins d'exécution sur un second ordinateur, l'ordinateur « cible ». Les programmes d'application traduits sont reliés à une traduction du logiciel du système informatique source. Ce logiciel traduit opère sur l'image de l'espace d'adresses de l'ordinateur source dans l'ordinateur cible exactement comme dans l'ordinateur source. La sémantique du logiciel du système informatique source est donc absolument préservée.
