Emerging organic displays require transparent, flexible substrates with ultra- low permeation of oxygen and water. We propose depositing barrier-coatings onto two separate plastic substrates and bringing them together coated face - to - coated face in permanent contact, for example by laminating, using an ultra-thin layer of an adhesive with low permeability. This may decrease permeation over that of each component film, by two orders of magnitude or more, and it will practically eliminate damaging effects of permeation through larger defects in the coatings, such as those created by roughness and dust particles.
