A B S T R A C T A transmission for a motor vehicle having an engine arranged at right angles to the direction of travel and an automatic gear change transmission flanged coaxially thereto. Arranged between the engine (not shown) and the said gear change transmission is a hydrodynamic unit, preferably a hydrodynamic torque converter. Gears are shifted by means of gear shifting clutches, gear shifting brakes and freewheels, the output torque being transferred by an output spur gear through spur gears and a lateral shaft, to an axle gearbox. The hollow gear of the planet coupling gear is connected to the output spur gear in the vicinity of the running gear, the said output spur gear being located immediately adjacent the planet coupling gear, a freewheel being arranged in the gear housing cover, and the connection from the planet carrier of the reduced planet coupling gear being passed through the output spur gear. This modified arrangement provides better utilization of the structural space, connecting parts are eliminated, and the weight of the transmission may be reduced.
