ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The scavenging pump action of a clutch is used to ensure an adequate supply of oil to the sump at any angle of operation of the transmission. The clutch preferably is placed at the front of the transmission, so that during downhill operation when the sump might be drained, oil can be pumped by the clutch back to the sump. The sump preferably is provided with a lip on the top portion thereof, so that a cup is formed at one end to retain oil in these extreme angled positions. An overflow passage between the main transmission housing and the clutch to allow oil flow therebetween preferably is positioned such that no such oil flow is allowed during normal operation, but ample oil flow is allowed during extreme hill operation to insure that sufficient oil is pumped back to the sump.
