ABSTRACT "A TRANSMISSION SYSTEM FOR DIGITAL SIGNALS" A transmission system in which at the trans- mitting-end PCM-codewords are converted into DPCM- codewords and at the receiving-end these DPCM-codewords are reconverted into PCM-codewords. For this purpose there is provided a DPCM-coder (2 to 8) with a quantizer (4) for codewords of variable length and with a quantizer (5) for codewords of fixed below-average length, and a DPCM-decoder (16 to 20) with a code converter (16) for codewords of variable length and a code converter (17) for codewords of fixed below-average length. Following each conversion, the type of conversion for the next PCM-codeword present at the input (1) is selected on the basis of the number of buffer storage positions (10) still available. This transmission system is suitable for the data reduction of digital television signals. (Fig. 1)
