Abstract of the Disclosure In digital transmission systems where a signal is converted into parallel bits which differ in significance from each other and which are then transmitted via respective transmission routes, failure of any one transmission route gives rise to noise. However, the level of the noise depends on whether the faulty transmission route is being used to carry a highly significant bit (in which case the noise level is high) or a less significant bit. If the route carrying a highly significant bit fails it is usually necessary to interrupt the transmission signal to remedy the trouble but if a bit of low significance is interrupted the noise level resulting is not sufficient to make the overall signal transmitted unacceptable. The invention makes use of this fact by providing switches in the transmission routes which enable the transmission routes to be interchanged so that if the transmission route which is nominally assigned to a highly significant bit is interrupted, the least significant bit is switched in to the faulty transmission route and, the highly-significant bit is moved into an adjacent transmission route. The other bits are moved respectively to adjacent transmission routes to accommodate the highly significant bit.
