ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Transmitter for an ultrasonic imaging apparatus which includes an array of transducer elements which are apt to be activated by electrical pulses for transmitting ultrasonic pulses in a plurality of directional angles, the pulses provided to the transducer elements having a predetermined position in time with respect to each other in order to define the directional angle of the transmitted ultrasonic waves. In order to simplify and thereby reduce the cost of the electronic circuits of the transmitter, which in the prior art included expensive arrangements of delay lines, a transmitter is dis- closed which comprises a multiplier forming the product of a pulse and a sequence of pulses the frequency of which is equal to the transmitting frequency. A first multiplexer is connected to a multiplier input, the multiplexer inputs receiving a number of said pulse sequences each at a given phase angle, said first multiplexer responding to a first control signal in order to supply a first input of the multiplier with a selected one of the pulse sequences having a suitable phase angle. A second multiplexer is connected to a second input of the multiplier and receives at its inputs a number of pulses having various delays relative to a reference signal and having a duration which overlaps the duration of a number of pulses of said pulse sequence and the intervals between them. The second multiplexer responds to a second control signal in order to supply a second input of the multiplier with a chosen one of the pulses having a suitable delay relative to the reference signal. A signal converter is connected to the multiplier output and serves for deriving, a transmitting pulse enveloping a sine wave of the transmitting frequency from the multiplier output signal.
