A novel method of vehicle modulated administration of an anticonvulsive agent to the mucous membranes of humans and animals is disclosed. The vehicle system is an aqueous pharmaceutical carrier comprising an aliphatic alcohol (10-80 %) or a glycol (10-80 %), and their combinations with a biological surfactant such as a bile salt or a lecithin. The pharmaceutical composition provides a means to control and promote the rate and extent of transmucosal permeation and absorption of the medicaments via a single and multiple administration. Nasal administration of the pharmaceutical preparation produces a high plasma concentration of the anticonvulsant nearly as fast as intravenous administration. Such compositions are particularly suitable for a prompt and timely medication of patients in the acute and/or emergency treatment of status epilepticus and other fever-induced seizures.

L'invention concerne une nouvelle méthode d'administration modulée par véhicules d'un agent anticonvulsif sur les membranes muqueuses de sujets humains et animaux. Le système de véhicules est un excipient pharmaceutique aqueux contenant un alcool aliphatique (10-80 %) ou un glycol (10-80 %), et leurs combinaisons avec un tensioactif biologique tel qu'un sel biliaire ou une lécithine. La composition pharmaceutique constitue un moyen permettant de commander et de stimuler la vitesse et le degré de perméance et d'absorption transmuqueuse des médicaments par une administration simple et multiple. L'administration nasale de la préparation pharmaceutique produit une concentration élevée de l'agent anticonvulsif dans le plasma presque aussi vite qu'une administration intraveineuse. Ces compositions sont particulièrement adaptées à la médication rapide et opportune de patients dans le traitement aigu et/ou d'urgence du status epilepticus et d'accès dus à la fièvre.
