12 48,028 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Transportation apparatus, such as escalators and moving walks, which discriminates between a momentary skirt deflection, such as caused by a sharp blow or kick, and a skirt deflection caused by an object which tends to wedge between the steps and a skirt panel. This is achieved by a control circuit which monitors the operation of the skirt switches. Operation of a skirt switch must persist for a predetermined period of time, or exist at the start and finish of a predetermined period of time, such as 15 milliseconds, before the apparatus is shut down.
