ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A travel control system for trains, especially monorail trains, is disclosed. At each stopping point, there is stop target mounted adjacent the rail. The train carries a detector for sensing the stop targets and bringing the train to a stop at such targets. At each stop, there is also provided a controllable signal transmitter, cooperating with a receiver carried by the train. The transmitter/receiver combination has a greater effective transmitting range, in a lengthwise direction, than the stop target and its sensing means. Accordingly, the normal stop instructions can be overridden by activation of the controllable transmitter, allowing the train to pass through the stopping point without stopping. The controllable transmitter is also useful for restarting a train stopped in the normal course. Improved speed code means and code reading means are provided, in the form of easily mounted and adjusted code plates carrying speed control information. A plurality of code elements are placed side by side and read by individual sensors as the train passes by. The improved system includes a processing control which sets a memory flag for each control sensor actuated by a given target plate. After the train has passed the target plate, the information is immediately evaluated and the train speed adjusted, if necessary, to correspond. The train also includes an improved arrangement for mounting the drive motor and drive wheel over a monorail, to minimize uneven wear caused by weight unbalance.
