Diseases associated with the tissues in the posterior segment of the eye can be effectively treated by administering therapeutic agents transsclerally to those tissues. Compositions, devices, and methods for delivering therapeutic agents so that they cross the sclera and reach these tissues include injecting solutions or suspensions adjacent to or within the sclera and implanting solid structures containing the therapeutic agent adjacent to or within the sclera. These methods may be used for administering rapamycin or related compounds to treat choroidal neovascularization associated with age-related macular degeneration.
Selon l'invention, les maladies affectant les tissus situés dans la partie postérieure de l'oeil peuvent être traitées efficacement par l'administration transsclérale d'agents thérapeutiques dans ces tissus. L'invention concerne des compositions, des dispositifs et des méthodes visant à administrer des agents thérapeutiques de sorte qu'ils traversent la sclère et atteignent ces tissus. Ces méthodes consistent à injecter des solutions ou des suspensions à proximité de la sclère ou dans la sclère, et à implanter des structures solides contenant un agent thérapeutique à proximité de la sclère ou dans la sclère. Les méthodes selon l'invention peuvent être utilisées dans l'administration de rapamycine ou de composés associés, pour traiter la néovascularisation choroïdienne causée par la dégénérescence maculaire liée à l'âge.
