ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention provides an equalizer having a combining circuit in which the number of inputs to the combining circuit does not increase beyond a predetermined number despite any increase in the number of taps. The equalizer includes a branching circuit for branching a digital modulated signal into two outputs which are orthogonal to each other. At least three first weighting circuits are provided for weighting one of the outputs of the branching circuits and second weighting circuits not greater in number than the first weighting circuits are provided for weighting the other of the outputs of the branching circuit. Combining circuits equal in number to the first weighting circuits are provided for combining two or three inputs and there are also included delaying circuits smaller in number by one than the combining circuits. The combining circuits and delaying circuits are interconnected sequentially and alternately. The outputs of the first weighting circuits are respectively applied to the combining circuits while those of the second weighting circuits are respectively applied to selected ones of the combining circuits.
