ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A tree-felling saw head that is slidably displaceable out of an enclosure by a pair of hydraulic rams and into cutting relationship with a tree, includes a pair of stationary top and bottom plates between which is rotatably mounted a saw disk with replaceable teeth. The disk is driven by a pinion gear of a hydraulic motor engaging a ring gear mounted within a recess of the disk, into which the top plate fits as a protective cover. Intrusion of foreign matter into the saw head through a clearance space between the disk and top plate is inhibited by a trap seal that comprises, in one embodiment, a pair of coplanar annular grooves in the facing circumferential edges of the top plate and the outermost radial boundary of the recess and a semisolid flowable lubricant disposed within the recess, clearance space and grooves. Further embodiments of the trap seal include a similar pair of grooves between corresponding circumferential edges of the disk and bottom plate, as well as annular chambers formed between the facing surfaces of the disk and plates.
