A beverage container is provided that is useful while traveling in a vehicle, and such container is referred to as a "travel mug." The travel mug includes a cup for holding a beverage such as coffee, water or soda pop, which cup is formed of side-walls and a base. A handle is attached to the side-walls and the handle has an upper end and a lower end where attached to the side-walls. The spacing between the upper end and the lower end is sufficiently great to accommodate the four fingers of a user's hand. The handle is ergonomically designed to deform to the contour of the user's hand when gripped around the handle. The handle includes a structural support member extending from the upper end to the lower end, and the cross-section of the structural support member has the shape of an I-beam. The structural support member has a web and flanges on opposing ends of the web, which flanges have an outer surface. Rib disks extend from the web to flush with the outside surfaces of the structural support member. The rib disks are sufficiently thin and pliable to deform and conform to the grip of the user's hand, which provides a comfortable feel when holding the travel mug. In another aspect, the travel mug has a contoured portion, which has a lesser outside diameter below the handle than within or above the handle. The contoured portion is sized to fit within a standard cup holder provided in a vehicle and is sized and shaped to comfortably fit in a user's hand. This contoured portion of the travel mug below the handle is contoured and has a gently-sloped ridge between two regions having a lesser outside diameter than that of the ridge.
