A Mach-Zehnder type electro-optic modulator (1) based e.g. on GaAs/GaAIAs or InP/InGaAsP comprises coplanar stripline (CPS) electrodes (12a, 12b), and optical waveguides (5a, 5b), disposed on a conducting substrate (2) or a conducting epitaxial CPS electrodes (12a, 12b) are selectively rendered insulating by ion implantation (29) to electrically isolate the CPS electrodes from each other.
