ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A tray is disclosed for use in a rectification column through which a liquid stream flows. The tray is of a geometric arrangement including slits formed therein so that w ranges from 1.0 to 3.0 mm, ?/w ranges from 10.0 to 350, T/w ranges from 1.3 to 5.0, and p/w is at least 1.3, where w represents the width of the slits, ? is the length of the slits, T represents the spacing between adjoining slits in a direction of liquid stream flow, and p represents the spacing between adjoining slits in a direction at a right angle to the direction of liquid stream flow. The values of w, ?/w, and p/w are chosen to provide maximum tray efficiency with minimum pressure drop across the tray at high liquid stream velocities. The tray disclosed allows operation of the rectification column at high gas velocities thereby increasing capacity and reducing column size requirements.
